Rules of the Competition

  1. Teams. All teams will be assigned at the beginning. The goal will be to have an even number of teams with an even number of players.

    • All teams will have a generic name to start. Creating a new team name within the first 7 days will result in an automatic 20 bonus points for your team. Each week you delay selecting a team name, this bonus goes down 10 points. If it perpetuates this will become a 10 point penalty.

    • Each week, except the last week of the competition, you will be paired against another team in a round-robin format. Points will be awarded for doing your job and bonuses for exceeding the other team. Doing all the exercise counts the most.

  2. Competition format: There will be 3-4 required rides each week on the bike. Extra credit will only be available to those who complete all rides. If you really dislike a ride I pick, you can substitute a ride of equal or greater length if you are not participating in the head to head part of the competition. You are not allowed to substitute low impact or recovery rides unless you are injured and have gotten permission to do so.

    • The rides will start out 20/30/45 min in length. I will periodically make the riding time longer as the challenge progresses so we see improvement. There will be 3 rides in most cases, though I may give an option to ride 2 20 minute rides instead of a 45 minute ride at some point. This is acceptable only if I say so.

    • Head-to-Head rides: 2 players from each team each week submit their output in competition against the other team. 15 points to the first place, 10 points to the second place, 5 points to the third place. No one can compete a second time until everyone has played once. There is a strategy in how you use your teammates.

    • Extra credit: There will be 3 extra credit opportunities each week. Each is worth 1 point. You're only eligible if you complete your primary rides. There is some overlap. I will make suggestions, but you can do what you want.

      1. Strength training: 20 minutes of total strength training. I will give suggestions, but you can substitute

      2. Cross training: 20 minutes of non-peloton bike exercise. This can be more strength, running, swimming, yoga, basketball, outdoor biking - whatever actually athletic thing you want to do except riding the bike

      3. Recovery: 20 minutes of exercise that helps you relax. This can be a recovery ride, but I'd prefer you do something outside and enjoy the weather. This can be a walk with your family, outside cycling, golfing, swimming, and even perineal sunning for anyone brave enough to admit to it.

  3. Scoring

    • Points based on length of ride: 2 points for 20 minutes, 3 points for 30 minutes, 4 points for 45 minutes

    • 1 point will be awarded for each of the extra credit opportunities, provided you've done the 3 required rides

    • Each week you will be directly competing with another team. 30 potential points (15/10/5 for 1st/2nd/3rd) are available for head to head rides, up to 25 of which can go to a single team.

    • Each week you will be directly competing with another team. A 20% bonus will be awarded to the team that does the most workouts. If both teams do the same number of workouts, they will split the prize and each get a 10% bonus

    • Teams are not completely even. If you have a ghost rider, the rider will generate a score equivalent to all riders who log rides that week

    • Every time you PR it is worth a bonus point

    • There will be sporadic and random challenges during which I will assign extra bonus points the scope of which will be at my discretion

  4. Winning the competition

    • Point tallies will determine ranking until I say otherwise.

    • The winning team will earn a trophy shaped like a golden bathroom fixture.
